Last night, I walked out of ABM Headquarters and into Pfizer (so conveniently located next door) to attend “Social Media Marketing: What’s Hot, What’s Next?” presented by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA). It was a productive evening of networking and social media education. There were mini-clinics on site that offered relevant information pertaining to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I dropped into the Twitter session where Heidi Cohen, president of Riverside Marketing Strategies, shared these tips that won’t make you a “ninja” overnight but at least will get you started.
- Brand Yourself. Make sure your Twitter handle is close to your name or brand; ideally, you want to minimize the number of characters. Include in your description important information about your business and fun facts. Don’t forget to include visual elements. They are important components of your page.
- Find Your Peeps. Colleagues, industry experts, industry publications, relevant brands and companies and the people they follow should be part of your Twitter team.
- Social Media, Social Responsibility. Remember, this is 24/7 real-time marketing and public relations. Be responsive to comments and ready to put out fires, if needed. Develop a crisis management plan with senior management - check out this article from Forbes in 2009 on social web guiding principles.
